Episode #165: Homeward
HOMEWARD - episode #13 of 7th season / Air Date: 1/17/94; Directed by Alex Singer
Teleplay by Naren Shankar; story by Spike Steingasser, William N. Stape
We're introduced to Worf's foster brother in this episode, Nikolai (Paul Sorvino, who was a bit too old for the role but is an excellent actor). This being the wrap-up season, there were several of these family-oriented episodes (Crusher was next), expanding on the backstories of the regulars. Nikolai is a very intelligent scientist but he has a tendency to go his own way, sometimes with no regard for consequences; at least, that's how Worf sees it. And, looks like Worf is right, going by what happens here - the premise of the Prime Directive and the capability of such incredible technology as the holodeck is what drives this episode, besides the familial conflict.
This story plays on the concept of a Matrix-styled (before that '99 film) reality which the people are not aware they are living in. The plan is to lead the tribe out of the caves to a new land while the Enterprise searches for a new planet. Worf plays the role of seer, guiding the people while arguing with his maverick brother. The Prime Directive is troublesome here: it's one thing not to interfere with a culture, but does it really apply to letting it die out suddenly due to natural disaster? It's a little like the U.S. refusing to give any help to Haiti after an earthquake because that would be considered interference. Yes, it is interference - but it's good interference, isn't it? Of course, Haitians are aware of the U.S. - that's the primary distinction: the aliens here are not aware of the Federation or of starships. So, Nikolai's plan - of keeping them in the dark - is rather clever.
