Episode #91: Night Terrors
NIGHT TERRORS episode #17 of 4th season / Air Date: 3/31/91
written by Pamela Douglas, Jeri Taylor, Shari Goodhartz; Directed by Les Landau
This one went for the scares in outer space approach, of the haunted house in outer space. It begins well but loses its way in the 2nd half and it was bettered by later episodes Schisms and Genesis, which went for the same chill. The Enterprise finds a smaller science vessel filled with corpses, with just one survivor, a Betazoid; Troi is especially disturbed but, of course, all are affected. It turns out, the crew killed each other (recalling TOS episode The Tholian Web).
This is scary in the first half, but when the crew starts to deduce why this is happening - they are in a region of space with a 'Tyken's Rift' and are unable to enter R.E.M. sleep, so they are not dreaming - it becomes a bore. In Ten Forward, Guinan whips out a cheesy-looking rifle to keep the peace. We also see Troi floating in some greenish space as part of her dream (she's Betazoid and can dream), and this is one of the more embarrassing moments for actress Sirtis.
BoG's Score: 5.5 out of 10
