episode #05: The Last Outpost
THE LAST OUTPOST episode # 5, first season / Air Date: 10/19/87
written by Herbert Wright, Richard Krzemien; Directed by Richard Colla
This episode was the intro of the Ferengi, the super merchants of the Trek universe. The Enterprise is in pursuit of a Ferengi ship; the Ferengi have stolen a Federation power device. Both ships are caught by some superior technology, which eventually is determined to originate from the planet which the ships are orbiting. So far, this now resembles the plot of TOS episode Arena.
A group of officers later beam down and confront a trio of Ferengi (2 of whom are played by Armin Shimerman and Tracey Walter). This doesn't go too well.
Until now, over-acting honors have gone to Denise Crosby as Yar; here, LeVar Burton overdoes it as La Forge, the helmsman sent to engineering early on; he gets really excited a couple of times, even yelling "Whoo-yee!" at one point. He also came across as unprofessional in this episode, muttering to himself while at the helm and pouting during a meeting. I guess he would mature once he was assigned to engineering permanently.
TNG Trivia: even with the shortcomings of Ferengi here, actor Armin Shimerman was good enough to win the regular role of Quark on DS9 in 1993. Wesley doesn't appear in this episode and is just mentioned by his mom.

Ferengi Ships & Whips
The Ferengi ship is called a Ferengi Marauder. The D'Kora-class is about 390 meters long. At the time of this episode, crews were all male; females had limited rights and were not allowed to travel. Each Marauder is commanded by a DaiMon. His mission is to make as much profit for himself and his crew as is possible - probably a lot. The average crew complement is around 450 personnel.
A Marauder has warp engines capable of speeds in excess of warp 9.
It has a variety of armaments, including plasma weapons. It also has shields for protection and a tractor beam.
I dunno... to me, whips were just so 23rd century...
...though I admit they worked really well against Riker & his gang in this episode.
Oh, and , btw, is it just me or was the make-up in the episode for this character called 'Portal' really odd?
