References to Hiroshima and to life-stealing vampires aside, this dubbed Italian film actually falls into the Mad Doctor or Jekyll/ Hyde subgenres. Here, the doc falls in love with a blonde stripper whose face he has restored using "Derma 28 spontaneous reproduction of cells." But to keep her restored he needs fresh glands from other young women. Turning himself into a beast using Derma 25, he spurs himself to kill his victims. Interestingly, the doctor (Alberto Lupo) is sympathetic. He is a far cry from the despicable doctors of, say, The Brain that Wouldn't Die or The Unearthly. He knows he is madly in love, he wrestles with his feelings, he wishes the ordeal were over and that he could run off with the girl and be happy. Many passages of the film seem quite serious, such as the debates about whether knowledge is valid if gleaned from crimes or tragedies. But when gore shows itself, the film lays it on thick. The lumpy-skin makeup is overdone to the point of camp. It's as if the writers wanted something meaningful but the makeup department persuaded the director to go with camp. There should have been more action and gore, and there should have been at least one suggestive scene in the strip club. As it is, too much time is spent watching characters cry or argue.
