Ray is well known to fantasy film buffs and stop-motion animation fans for his work on The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958) and Jason and the Argonauts (1962). His sci-fi work includes The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms (1953), It Came From Beneath the Sea (1955), Earth vs. the Flying Saucers (1956), 20 Million Miles to Earth (1957), Mysterious Island (1961), First Men in the Moon (1964), One Million Years BC (1966) and Valley of Gwangi (1969).

The latter two contain his great dinosaur work. He also created the Ymir creature from Venus, a giant octopus and an earlier dinosaur known as a Rhedosaurus - some of his earliest work. He began as an assistant to Willis O'Brien on Mighty Joe Young (1949), which featured a huge gorilla. Throughout the fifties, sixties and seventies he was the premiere artist of the stop-motion animation process. Others who followed in his footsteps include Jim Danforth and David Allen. R.I.P. Ray -- for your work will surely live on.
