Deep Rising (1998)
IT COMES UP FROM THE DEEP...
starring TREAT WILLIAMS * FAMKE JANSSEN
ANTHONY HEALD * KEVIN J.O'CONNOR * WES STUDI * JASON FLEMYNG
Here's one of the last monster pictures of the 20th century. Yess.. over a decade ago, director Stephen Sommers brought us this old-fashioned yet grisly creature feature, emulating everything from It Came From Beneath the Sea of the fifties to all the low-budget ghoulish monster stuff of the seventies & eighties. Sommers would go on to helm the Mummy movies, which were big successes; this monster picture was not, but it was fun. I just didn't like the title (what the hell does it really mean?) - I would've preferred something like "Things From the Deep" - maybe that's why it wasn't a box office success.starring TREAT WILLIAMS * FAMKE JANSSEN

This film came out at the same time as Phantoms (1998), another monster movie which depicted a lot of people disappearing on land; in this one, a lot of people disappear at sea, on The Argonautica, the latest fancy cruise ship. As in Phantoms, the monster is tough to kill and human beings are easy prey. A band of mercs, along with a few other reluctant tagalongs, present a darkly funny ensemble as they make their way through the new ship of horrors.
Kevin O'Connor provides a lot of the humor with wry line delivery, but lead actor Williams is also amusing. As the corrupt ship owner, Anthony Heald also steals a scene or two, and turns out to be the only one knowledgeable (for some odd reason) on these monsters infesting the ship. Famke Janssen, as the main femme fatale among the macho men, does some of her best work here. Wes Studi is grim & professional as the leader of the mercs but even he gets involved in some dark ironic humor in his final scenes.
Some monster-like trivia: Harrison Ford was the original choice for the lead role of Finnegan, eventually played by Treat Williams. Ford was one of the biggest box office stars then and when Williams was cast, the budget was severely reduced. Ford, I'm guessing, felt the film script was beneath him and, at that time, starred instead in Six Days Seven Nights - a forgettable film, ironically.
