episode #03: The Naked Now
THE NAKED NOW episode #3, first season / Air Date: 10/5/87
written by J. Michael Bingham, John D.F. Black; Directed by Paul Lynch
Today.. the Enterprise! Tomorrow...ze Galaxy!
This very early episode was a remake/sequel to the TOS episode The Naked Time (also an early episode of the first season of TOS in 1966). Though word at the time was that there was a conscious effort on the part of Roddenberry and his crew to avoid using elements of TOS, the intent of this episode was to obviously establish some... tenuous connection with the old series. Would that this new version displayed a similar high level of entertainment, but it was not to be...
The Enterprise crew come across a science vessel where all the crew are just finishing killing themselves due to apparent intoxication (don't drink and drive a spaceship!). Soon, the Enterprise crew are infected - everyone starts to sweat and behave like they're out of it; Dr. Crusher tries to seduce Picard; Yar succeeds in seducing Data (yuch - how unprofessional!); Wesley seduces the engine room - much like Riley in The Naked Time, Wesley tricks all the engineers in vacating this crucial section of the ship and takes over. It was all very one-note > everyone in heat.
