Episode #129: Man of the People
MAN OF THE PEOPLE - episode #3 of 6th season / Air Date: 10/18/92
written by Brannon Braga, Frank Abatemarco; Directed by Winrich Kolbe
This episode features a diplomat (Chip Lucia) who gives 24th century diplomats a bad name; in fact, this is one instance when current diplomacy in our real world seems actually superior to how it's done in TNG's far future - at least, that's how it seems in this episode. This diplomat beams aboard with an old woman who he says is his mother; of course, she's not, really. The old lady babbles some threatening statements at Troi, acting like she's in the grip of dementia and dies soon after. Very soon after this, Troi starts to act slutty; Riker walks in to her cabin just after she's had her way with an ensign; Riker walks out, shaking his head, thinking (I guess) 'what a slut...!'
Soon after this, Troi begins to look older; then, a lot older. In fact, she starts to resemble the old lady who had died recently... oh-oh, there could be a connection It turns out, the diplomat has sociopathic tendencies; he's able to somehow channel all his personal negative feelings to another person - a woman he uses as a vessel - so that he can be a great diplomat, solving all manner of conflicts with great aplomb. I guess this has a draining effect on the woman he is using; he must have gone through a lot of women before Picard catches on to what he is doing here.
Otherwise, I had no interest in the story of a corrupt diplomat who rationalizes things to further his career. It also seems very unfeasible to me that he would get away with this for more than a few months - how would he be able to continue passing off a continual parade of dying women as his mother - yet it's suggested that he's had a long career doing this. This plot has some resemblance to the Twilight Zone episodes Queen of the Nile and Long Live Walter Jameson, though those had to do with immortality. BoG's Score: 5 out of 10
