Episode #134: A Fistful of Datas
A FISTFUL OF DATAS - episode #8 of 6th season / Air Date: 11/9/92
written by Robert Hewitt Wolfe; Directed by Patrick Stewart
The title of this one plays on the title of the famous spaghetti western A Fistful of Dollars (1964), the one that made Clint Eastwood a star and began the whole Italian western sub-genre. Worf's son (Brian Bonsall) is back in the spotlight again, this time eager to try a holodeck adventure set in the Old West; he wants Worf in the role of the tough sheriff, with himself as his deputy. Troi also joins in as a mysterious stranger (her human father had been a fan of old westerns). The Enterprise is waiting for something so everyone has a lot of spare time - even Picard, who tries to practice his flute playing.
Meanwhile, Data & La Forge have too much time on their hands - they are trying some experiment with Data's positronic brain, hooking him into the ship's computer. There's a glitch and Data's android mind begins to take over sections of the ship's computer, including the holodeck; all the other characters in the holodeck story begin to look like Data - mostly bad guys. Unfortunately, they also have Data's android abilities and the holodeck can't be turned off. Looks like Worf has his work cut out for him; but with Troi and his son at his side... he should prevail
TNG Trivia: as mentioned, Picard is seen playing a flute here; this is the skill he picked while living another life in the episode The Inner Light (5th season). La Forge begins to grow a beard in this episode and appears unshaven - an odd coincidence in that this episode copies the westerns which usually featured unshaven heroes in the Eastwood mold.
