The Towering Inferno (1974)
The bad guy of the piece is played by Richard Chamberlain, son-in-law to William Holden's owner character. Chamberlain is the one responsible for the cost-cutting measures; he is totally unrepentant during the ordeal, interested only in his own escape. He's a really slimy, almost 2-dimensional villain - oh, and, married to Susan Blakely's character. Faye Dunaway is Newman's love interest, a magazine editor. Fred Astaire plays an elderly conman who finds love too late with Jennifer Jones. Robert Vaughn is a guest, a senator, no less. Robert Wagner plays the publicity guy who ends up trapped in his office with his secretary/lover (Susan Flannery). O.J. Simpson plays the main security officer - this was one of his first roles; he had a film career in the late seventies.
A Towering Cast
Towering Trivia: there was a lot of behind-the-scenes negotiation about the billing for this film in regard to McQueen and Newman, both in their prime as the biggest stars at that time; it was finally settled by having McQueen's name first, but Newman's name would be placed a bit higher; McQueen preferred this - he knew that people read from left to right; actor Holden also lobbied to have his name listed first but he was not considered as big a star by this point; McQueen also became the highest paid actor at that time with this film - $1.5 million plus 10% of the gross; Newman was paid a million + a %; Holden - $750,000
This did surpass the box office gross of The Poseidon Adventure - as planned - and was the 2nd highest grossing move released in that year (1974), only surpassed by the runaway success of the Mel Brooks comedy, Blazing Saddles
