Hardware Wars (1978)
The original 13-minute parody and fan film: made on a shoestring by Ernie Fosselius to satirize the original Star Wars (77), featuring such characters as Fluke Starbucker and Ham Salad. The outer space scenes feature various appliances such as toasters flying about. The early desert scenes were filmed on a beach and feature a dune buggy. The bar scene (a version of the Cantina scene) was filmed in a local bar, of course. Not all of the humor holds up - it's just too amateurish, but some of it was inspired, including the unintelligible villain and the action scene when Ham kicks over a garbage can.
The actors, though unknown and inexperienced, are actually pretty funny. There is also some dubbing involved for the vocals/dialog, but it adds to the charm. The guy playing Ham especially has some amusing expressions to parody Harrison Ford's Han Solo. The one playing the goofy version of Luke Skywalker is also a complete goof, usually looking shocked or frightened. The older actor parodying Kenobi gets headaches and looks rueful. The robot looks like the Tin Man from The Wizard of Oz, while the smaller one is a kind of vacuum cleaner I think Fosselius plays another role, the guy explaining the ridiculous plan to attack the Death Star. BoG's Score: 6.5 out of 10
Hardware Trivia: A special edition version of this was released in 1997 (see video on the right, above), the same as with the real Star Wars films, with supposedly spiffed-up FX... ...don't expect too much
