Captain America (1990)

Over 20 years before the Marvel Cinematic Universe definitive Captain America movie, there was this low-budget Albert Pyun version, a version that went direct-to-video and is similar to the unreleased 1994 version of The Fantastic Four: it's one of those films that may have been better off as not having been made and is largely unwatchable. It subverts some of the classic elements of the hero's mythos, making his ultimate foe, The Red Skull, an Italian for some reason. There is one early sequence when Cap (Matt Salinger) confronts his nemesis (Scott Paulin) and this is done well (and eerily similar to the same confrontation in the 2011 version). But, the rest is boring garbage. Some of the story is similar to the original: after a brief WW2 adventure, Cap does go into suspended animation in the cold wilderness of Alaska (not the Arctic); while he sleeps, the Red Skull continues his nefarious doings as a kind of super mafia chieftain, responsible for several famous assassinations in the sixties. After Cap finally awakens, he wanders around in a daze for awhile and the action never picks up much. BoG's Score: 3 out of 10
