FAMILY - episode #2 of 4th season / Air Date: 10/1/90
written by Ronald D. Moore; Directed by Les Landau
A direct follow-up to the end of The Best of Both Worlds 2-parter, following Picard after his bad experience with the Borg; some of this episode wouldn't have much meaning without knowledge of the previous episode's events. This episode takes place on Earth and in orbit around Earth. Picard decides to visit his childhood home in France and we meet his older brother, Robert (Jeremy Kemp), Robert's wife (Samantha Eggar) and Picard's nephew, Rene. Meanwhile, Worf's adoptive parents (Theodore Bikel, Georgia Brown) visit him on the ship, which is undergoing refits. In yet a 3rd story, Dr. Crusher prepares to give Wesley a holographic recording from his deceased dad, Jack Crusher.
Here's a funny take on Picard's turmoil in this episode:
A Final Note: the final image here is of Rene seated under a tree with a starry night sky in the background as he dreams of traveling in outer space; it conjures up images of old juvenile sci-fi and old-style Heinlein and the later influenced Spielberg-styled sci-fi fantasy; it's a great finish.TNG Trivia: there's a tragic undertone to seeing the episode nowadays: 4 years later, Robert and Rene would die in a fire; this was stated in Star Trek Generations (1994). This, however, is also a commentary on the vagaries of life: it seems so nice & safe at Picard's old home in France, while Picard goes back to danger in outer space. Yet, he survives his brother and his nephew.
Under the heading of unusual trivia, this was the first Star Trek episode, including TOS, in which there were no scenes on the bridge.
