Episode #90: Galaxy's Child
GALAXY'S CHILD - episode #16 of 4th season / Air Date: 3/11/91
written by Joe Menosky, story by Thomas Kartozian; Directed by Winrich Kolbe
This is kind of a sequel to Booby Trap (3rd season), in which La Forge interacted with a hologram version of ship designer Leah Brahms (Susan Gibney). Now, the real Leah Brahms comes aboard and she's not what the lovestruck La Forge expected: she's unfriendly and doesn't appreciate any of the modifications that he has made to the engines.
At the same time, the Enterprise encounters one those huge lifeforms which moves about in outer space, like an interstellar version of our whales (it also calls to mind the "Tin Man" entity of that same-named episode, but no one mentions this). It seems to attack the ship and the pacifistic Picard promptly kills it; OK, not quite that simple - he orders a low energy phaser blast and is depressed that his plan to just stun it didn't work. This may be a commentary on how life may impact other life negatively, despite best intentions; sometimes, just the planned act of observation will result in a negative outcome.
But, it ain't over; the dead space-whale was apparently pregnant and the Enterprise phasers now assist in the birth. However, the baby space-whale thinks the ship is its mom and attaches itself to the back of the battle bridge section. It begins to drain energy. Picard...! Meanwhile, Leah finds the old holodeck program with her simulation and screams holo-rape! Oy... the 24th century - guys have to deal with some strange life problems. It's mildly interesting. BoG's Score: 6.5 out of 10
