Episode #98: The Mind's Eye
THE MIND'S EYE - episode #24 of 4th season / Air Date: 5/27/91
written by René Echevarria and Ken Schaefer; Directed by David Livingston
Star Trek tries a Manchurian Candidate-styled story: the brainwashed 'soldier' is La Forge; the stand-ins for the Chinese are the Romulans, doing their best to be the most diabolical, most scheming race on TNG. On his way to Risa (from Captain's Holiday) in a shuttlecraft, La Forge is kidnapped by the Romulans. They subject him to torturous brainwashing (an incorrect term, as Data later points out), implanting orders in his mind to murder someone. They also send a lookalike of La Forge to Risa; they think these things out!
This is not bad for a TV thriller - there's the suspense (at one point, it looks like La Forge is set to kill O'Brien) and the surprises. La Forge doesn't go back to business-as-usual after the plot is foiled; he will need to heal his mind with the help of Troi - this is realistic for TV. Also, there's a shadowy female Romulan commander in one scene; a couple of episodes later, we would find out who this is. BoG's Score: 7 out of 10
