episode #23 - Second Chance
Air Date: 3/2/64 writers: Lin Dane, Lou Morheim Director: Paul Stanley
At a barely-frequented amusement park, a real off-world alien (Simon Oakland) is prowling around. After hours, he disintegrates a security guard. The next day, he gives out free tickets for a flying saucer ride to a select few patrons of the park. Unknown to them or the ride's operators (Don Gordon as the make-believe pilot and Janet de Gore as a stewardess), the alien has converted the ride into a functional flying saucer So, off they all go into outer space! The alien has an agenda... what is it?
This has a good starting point and an intriguing premise, but the 2nd half and the reveal by the alien on the 'why' just doesn't follow through - it's muddy and even baffling. It didn't make much sense to me - this very small (6 or 7 people), almost sub-average group is meant to start up a new colony somewhere? How? The motivations of the alien are strange; he seems benevolent, but kills that guard in the first act. It's like the writers didn't know where to take the story. BoG's Score: 4.5 out of 10
Outer Trivia: actor Gordon was previously in the episode The Invisibles. Oakland, not recognizable here, is best known as Kolchak's boss in The Night Stalker TV Movies and series.
