episode #04: Code of Honor
CODE OF HONOR episode #4, first season
written by Kathryn Powers, Michael Baron; Directed by Russ Mayberry
The crew visit an alien culture which has strange ideas about honor. The guy-in-charge (or so it seems), Lutan, is very impressed by Tasha Yar and demonstrates his admiration by kidnapping her. This daring action gains him many macho points or something. His aim, in the end, is to get Yar to fight his wife to the death. This kind of copies Amok Time from TOS - not a good sign at that point, so early in the series, as, like The Naked Now, it's a very inferior copy.
TNG Trivia: from what I read, the director, Mayberry, was fired midway by Roddenberry for a perceived racist approach, such as insisting on only African-American actors for the guest roles. So, that's where the problems all began - they weren't meant to be all African-American originally. For all I know, Mayberry was just trying to get more paying roles for African-Americans and this backfired on him, but I could be naive. Those whacky eighties...
