episode #23: Skin of Evil
SKIN OF EVIL - episode #23, first season / Air Date: 4/25/88
written by Joseph Stefano; Directed by Joseph L. Scanlan
Here then is death... in the 24th century. It's sudden, unexpected and cruel. It's also pointless, as so depicted, but then... death often is. In the plot, a shuttlecraft with Troi crashlands on an unknown planet. A landing party on its way to rescue her encounter a thing which looks like an oil slick and turns out to be alive - its name is Armus (voiced by Ron Gans). It doesn't allow them to reach the downed shuttlecraft.
Yar has no patience for these games; with a flick of its power, Armus kills her. Unfortunately for Yar and the rest, Armus has great power; phasers do not affect it. It then continues to torment Troi and the others, swallowing Riker at one point and then toying with Data, forcing the android to point his phaser at the others. Armus eventually reveals its origin to Troi: a race of Titans cast off the part of themselves which was considered evil; this collected into what is now Armus.
TNG Trivia: in reality, actress Denise Crosby, who plays Yar, wanted out of the series, feeling that her character was not being developed properly. This episode gave her a dramatic way to exit. She managed to return as a guest star in the 3rd season episode Yesterday's Enterprise, in which she played Yar in an alternate universe. She later guest-starred again as her own offspring - Sela - in further episodes such as Redemption. She made an appearance as the original Yar in the final episode, All Good Things..., which skipped back and forth in time. Denise Crosby did manage a small-time movie career, the highlight of which was a starring role in the horror film Pet Sematary (1989).
