Kick-Ass (2010)
There's a moment in KICK-ASS when Kick-Ass (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) first confronts a pair of thugs - it doesn't go the way you'd expect in a supposed super-hero movie. Fact is, it goes the way we'd expect it to in real life. It was an eyebrow-raising moment for me, at a time when most films do not hold any surprises for me.
But wait...! Then along comes Hit Girl (Chloe Grace Moretz). When we first see her do her super-hero thing in the film, it's... shall we say, hair-raising. Where Kick-Ass plays at being a super-hero, as if it's a game, Hit Girl is the real thing. She storms her way on a path of utter destruction as wretched hoods fall away from her like wheat before a scythe. It's different, in that we usually see a grown male in costume doing all the damage or, less usual, a grown woman. Plugging in an 11-year old girl into such a role changes all the dynamics - we just aren't accustomed to this.
There's also her dad, Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage), who sort of resembles Batman on drugs. Some of this also borrows a bit from the SPIDER-MAN films (Kick-Ass, in his civilian identity, lives in a home and neighborhood which is just like Peter Parker's in the SPIDER-MAN films). And there are nods to WATCHMEN, which also had (mostly) non-powered people putting on costumes and much violence.
It's violent, perhaps even profane to an extent... but the bad guys get theirs. That's something. BoG's Score: 8.5 out of 10
Kick Trivia: based on the recent comic book by Mark Millar and John Romita, Jr.
----------- though this was not a big box office hit, it also wasn't costly to make and a sequel arrived in 2013.
