What more can be said about such a title? This is thought of as the nadir of the series, the most famous silly episode, much like The Way to Eden & Spock's Brain are the famously bad Star Trek episodes. In the plot, it's the Robot's birthday - or the Robinsons decided this is so. They have a cake and everything; Smith gets the ridiculous idea to use the Escape Pod to go down to the planet they're orbiting to get some flowers, I think. The planet is dominated by plants - pretty aggressive plants; yes, it's an 'Attack of the Killer Plants' plot - Lost in Space style.
John decides to follow Smith down, despite Don's objections. The leader of the plants is a vegetable (hence the title), a big carrot named Tybo (Stanley Adams). I was never too clear on its plans - I think it wanted to turn all animals into vegetables or just destroy all animals in the never-ending war between plants & animals. There's also a vague idea that standing in place will cause people to develop roots. There's also a purple-haired human there whose heart had been replaced with vegetables. I don't rate this the lowest because there's some fun on this jungle-like planet, much like The Apple on TOS. BoG's Score: 3 out of 10
NOTE: Roald Dahl also used the concept of plants screaming in pain when cut on his Tales of the Unexpected series in the early eighties, the episode The Sound Machine.
Lost in Trivia:
Star Trek TOS actor alert - Adams played Cyrano Jones in The Trouble With Tribbles
