Episode #06: Captive Pursuit
CAPTIVE PURSUIT (production #406; first season) Directed by Corey Allen
written by Jill Sherman Donner and Michael Piller
The visitor's name is Tosk; he holds the distinction of being the first visitor to DS9 from the Gamma Quadrant, coming in through the wormhole. He is vaguely reptilian, oddly curious yet also wary. He's also secretive. His small ship was obviously fired upon by someone (s) but he lies about this. O'Brien is the first DS9 resident to meet Tosk; O'Brien, as usual, is the one expected to effect repairs on the damaged ship. Early on, Tosk reveals to have chameleon-like powers, able to turn virtually invisible. He hides from O'Brien at first but soon lowers his personal defenses; likewise, O'Brien quickly warms up to the visitor - Tosk strikes him as kind of naive and somewhat charming.
This story is another example of an alien culture with alien morals & sensibilities which our own cannot really relate to or understand. Sisko does mention bloodsports as a part of Earth history but even in the past, hunting sentient beings was quite rare and was considered abhorrent by the vast majority. The tricky part to all this is that the Tosk does not consider himself a victim; because of the way he was created and raised, his favorite moments are when he is in the middle of eluding his pursuers. THAT is his purpose in life; and, as is taught to us by many episodes in the Trek franchise, purpose may be the most important thing a thinking entity can have. Obviously, there is no time to conduct a life-changing lesson to a lifeform from a different culture. But, O'Brien just might end up helping his new friend somehow.
The lead hunter is played by Gerritt Graham, who also played another Q on a Voyager episode.
