Episode #10: Move Along Home
MOVE ALONG HOME (prod.#410; first season) Director: David Carson
written by Frederick Rappaport, Lisa Rich, Jeanne Carrigan-Fauci and Michael Piller
The plot of this one seems to involve First Contact with a new species, the Wadi, but degenerates into a 'high-concept' new age-style depiction of a surreal / abstract game which ensnares a quartet of DS9's top officers (Sisko, Dax, Bashir & Kira).
Sisko, at the start of the episode, is in full dress uniform and excited at the prospect of acting out the most important role of Starfleet - greeting a newly-met species. But, the visitors, an odd bunch, are only interested in going to Quark's place. They're high stakes gamers, it seems; Quark is caught cheating and the Wadi force him into a new game, called Chula. They materialize a strange contraption which works like a game board. At the same time, the 4 officers disappear and end up in some maze, which may or may not be real. The whole thing has a goofy tone and lacks tension. No explanation is offered for how the Wadi accomplish their 'magic' and it ends up as quite trivial. "Only a game" indeed. BoG's Score: 4 out of 10
