episode #14 - The Return of Bigfoot, Part 2
episode #1 of 2nd season / Air Date: 9/22/76 written by Kenneth Johnson Directed by Barry Crane
The first episode of the 2nd season continues from the 1st episode of The Six Million Dollar Man's 4th season, The Return of Bigfoot, in a grand play by the producers of both shows to get things started with a bang this season. Austin was seriously injured in the first part while battling a controlled Bigfoot/Sasquatch (Ted Cassidy), his bionic legs damaged and a nuclear power cell ruptured to give him a lethal dose of radiation (no safeguards built in by Rudy?). So, Jaime has to sort of take over here, trying to locate the hidden base of the aliens in the CA mountains and hopefully find a cure for her bionic buddy. Nedlick (John Saxon), leader of a bad sect of the aliens, notices her and sends Bigfoot against her. It's up to good alien Gillian (Sandy Duncan) to help Jaime out of a hairy jam. Nedlick's ambitions, however, have escalated everything to apocalyptic proportions; his use of a volcano by his base in Mexico will cause the ocean floor to move 5 feet and thereby swamp the west coast - these illegal aliens! They are really getting to be a problem...
More than even the 1st part of this 2-parter, this recalls some cheesy sixties sci-fi pictures and sci-fi TV series, with many scenes taking place in a tropical jungle setting that reminded me of some Lost in Space episodes. There's stock footage of a volcano, for example, which reminded me of films like Crack in the World (1965). In especially the last 2 acts, this has the feel of a low budget disaster picture. Jaime gets to dance with Bigfoot for awhile and Bigfoot seems to see some resemblance in her to Shalon (Stephanie Powers), his mistress, though I didn't really see this. The climactic action is very comic book-styled, with a suddenly-recovered Austin (Lee Majors) helping to put the kibosh on the bad aliens (Charles Cyphers' character gets put through the ringer here) and then a truly ludicrous use of an alien time-control gizmo to halt the lava. As I mentioned - Lost in Space level here. BoG's Score: 6.5 out of 10
Bionic Trivia: Martin E. Brooks began to get credited as a regular character here.
Like Richard Anderson, he doubled down as a regular on The Six Million Dollar Man series also.
