Spaceways (1953 UK)
I found this to be very boring when I first watched it a few years ago. I gave it another shot today and it wasn't as bad as I remembered, but it still misrepresents itself. The trailer - mentioning "Space Islands" - gives the impression of a film in which half of it takes place in outer space - that isn't the case. Two characters (played by the leads Howard Duff and Eva Bartok) are finally shown inside a spacecraft traveling into Earth orbit only in the final 10 minutes. The rest of the film is generally "grounded."
As I mentioned, I liked this more the 2nd time around - I relaxed into the situation of scientists working towards implementing mankind's early space program. However, though the drama was mildy diverting, it was also highly unlikely; I was never clear as to what kind of double agent the sneaky scientist was and the wife was little more than a shrewish caricature. Meanwhile, Bartok's 'hopelessly-in-love' character was the stuff of teen magazines. Duff was kind of stiff. There were good performances by Wheatley and Philip Leaver as the professor in charge. BoG's Score: 5 out of 10
Space Trivia: the script for this one was adapted from a radio play by Charles Eric Maine; this was an early Hammer sf film
