episode #27 - Doomsday is Tomorrow, Part 2
episode #14 of 2nd season / Air Date: 1/26/77 written and directed by Kenneth Johnson
In the 2nd part of this doomsday threat, Jaime undergoes a self-described "duel" with a super computer named "Alex" (the Alex 7000 is the more proper name). The supervillain (Lew Ayres) has already died - though he re-appears a couple of times in videotaped messages. But, he has left a chilling legacy - his avatar / creation, Alex, will carry out his last instructions / computations, meaning the destruction of the world. The problem is actually instigated by some middle-eastern country which does not believe in the threat; it (led by David Opatoshu) conducts a nuclear bomb test and so the 6-hour countdown to doomsday begins. Jaime must make her way through 8 levels of underground construction, to about a mile beneath the surface, where she hopes to deactivate Alex. Alex, a blatant copy of HAL from 2001:A Space Odyssey, will do everything it can to prevent this. As I wrote for part one, the scope is big.
Obviously, this episode is high on thrills and action; Jaime has to go through a lethal obstacle course as she makes her way down into the bowels of Alex's brain. It's bad enuff that she gets damaged - one of her bionic legs gets struck by a descending door. The more interesting scenes turn out to be the pauses in the action - and that's impressive; usually, pauses in TV are a bore. Alex, for example, is unaware that Jaime is bionic but deduces this after some analysis. The highlight is when Jaime effects repairs on herself, using one of Alex's own consoles to help out. Her conversations with Alex become increasingly tense and, therefore, more entertaining; by the final act, Jaime is getting quite annoyed with Alex and it's grimly amusing. I was also surprised to see some scenes which may have been copied by James Cameron for Terminator 2:Judgment Day, in particular scenes of children playing. Of course, it may be coincidence. BoG's Score: 7.5 out of 10
