Invisible Invaders
What's Happening: Ghostlike aliens turn corpses into a zombie army to attack Earth
Famous For: Influence on Night of the Living Dead
Silly and entertaining, Invisible Invaders would make a fine addition to a B-movie party night with the gang. Appearing late in the decade, it takes many 50s motifs and rolls them into one: stock characters, stock footage, portentous narrators, aliens that have been observing us for thousands of years but finally make their move before we can enter the space age, fears of radiation, a mad search to find the "one thing" that will beat the aliens, and more. All four of the main actors are familiar to 50s sci-fi fans (John Agar, John Carradine, Robert Hutton, Jean Byron), and together they help make Invisible Invaders a sort of archetypal B-movie. There is excellent camp when the possessed corpses commandeer microphones and deliver their threats to humanity; in one instance this happens at a hockey game (!). Carradine, we should note, dies in the opening scene but returns as a talking zombie right afterwards. It's also funny how most corpses are Italian -looking men in their 50s, so that it feels like Earth is being attacked by a zombie mafia.
