The Core (2003)
Yes, it is... because another whacky scientist (Delroy Lindo) just happens to have developed both a special laser and a special material for such a ship. All he needs is 15 billion bucks to construct it; the U.S. government is willing. The special material, btw, was named Unobtanium, which preceded the same-named stuff in the film Avatar by 6 years; this makes Avatar a kind of sequel to The Core - wild, eh? (Unobtanium was coined as a term in literature years earlier).
The pilots of the ship are played by Bruce Greenwood and Hilary Swank; Greenwood is in command, but Swank plays the ace pilot who will probably do most of the heroic piloting. Stanley Tucci plays a haughty scientist-type; he's let fame and fortune govern his career direction and is the most entertaining character. They're all entertaining characters actually, in that B-movie style, and not all of them will survive the trip, so there is that tension. But, I let this one relax me as I sit back to enjoy some crazy sf thrills. BoG's Score: 7 out of 10
at the 9-minute mark, during the birds sequence, there's a joke from the FX guys - there's a trout hitting the window amid all the birds.
