Episode #44: Up the Long Ladder
UP THE LONG LADDER episode #18 of season#2 / Air Date: 5/22/89
written by Melinda Snodgrass; Directed by Winrich Kolbe
Another episode which is painful to watch in places. This begins with Worf getting sick with a Klingon form of the measles; this is embarrassing for him but Pulaski covers for him. In gratitude, he shares a Klingon tea ceremony with her; the tea is so potent that it's deadly to humans, but Pulaski takes an antidote in order to partake. What was the point of all this? Damned if I know. I think the Trekmakers carried the concept of showing new facets of the Klingon culture too far here - it's a bit too quirky for my taste.
The rest of this episode is little better. The Enterprise encounter two long lost human colonies. The first one needs to be rescued from a planet due to solar flares. It's composed of Irish farmers who are beamed aboard with their chickens and hay. This is meant to be funny - it's simply ludicrous and foolish - a pain to view, see? The 2nd colony turns out to be composed of clones, all descended from the mere 5 survivors of a crash landing. They try to steal some cells from Riker & Pulaski; Riker gets really perturbed here - there can be only one Riker! (just wait 'till the episode Second Chances; Riker will be outta luck on that score).
