Episode #57: The Vengeance Factor
THE VENGEANCE FACTOR episode #9 of 3rd season / Air Date: 11/20/89
written by Sam Rolfe; Directed by Timothy Bond
The crew arrive at a looted Federation outpost; evidence points to The Gatherers, which are the outlaw bikers of the Trek universe. They all need a haircut, a shower and dress in fashions reminiscent of a Road Warrior-type culture. They make they way through life via 2nd-hand technology - stuff they stole. They are actually one sect of the Acamarian people; the Acamarians used to be divided into primitive clans but have mostly advanced beyond that - except for The Gatherers - or so it seems. The Acamarian leader (Nancy Parsons) is willing to discuss amnesty for the Gatherers.
This appears to be another attempt to graft other sci-fi themes (The Road Warrior, Escape From New York) into the austere Trek universe, but the Gatherers do provide more colorful scenes and dialog than the typical TNG episode of the time. There are some impressive (for TV) sets here and the whole 'look' of the episode is unusual. I liked the performances of the actors (Joey Aresco, Stephen Lee) portraying the irreverent, anarchic leaders of The Gatherers. The plot is solid, as well - there's suspense, action, drama and even a tense, chilling conclusion, offsetting the overall happy ending.
