Episode #77: Brothers
BROTHERS - episode #3 of 4th season / Air Date: 10/8/90
written by Rick Berman; Directed by Rob Bowman
The return of Lore, Data's android brother (from Datalore in the 1st season) offers actor Brent Spiner a chance to pull an Alec Guinness or Peter Sellers here: playing 3 different roles in one episode and even in the same scenes. He plays Data, Lore and their father, the old genius Dr. Noonien Soong. Data gets the android equivalent of hypnotized and takes over the bridge of the ship; he directs the ship to some planet and beams down alone. In the middle of some jungle lives old Soong, believed dead by all concerned. Soong had activated some homing beacon inside Data; Soong is finally close to death (he escaped death on Omicron Theta by the Crystalline Entity) and wanted to install his newest (and final) invention into Data: an emotion chip.
TNG Trivia: the emotion chip which got away from Data would figure prominently in the 1st TNG movie - Star Trek Generations (1994), when Data would finally try it.
