Journey to Babel - episode #44
JOURNEY TO BABEL (2nd season, episode #44)
Directed by Joseph Pevney writer: D.C. Fontana
Air Date: 11/17/67
This one was like a handbook on Trek's 23rd century, TOS, done up in episodic video style. We learn all about the Federation's allies, its enemies, its politics and even some social customs. The Enterprise hosts a bunch of ambassadors, including other Vulcans; one of these is Spock's father, Sarek, accompanied by his human wife, Spock's mom, Amanda (superbly played by Mark Lenard and Jane Wyatt). This is a very nicely-balanced episode; there are humorous scenes but it's mostly driven by intrigue (political differences), mystery (murder) and some drama regarding Spock's family. We learn that there is a rift between father and son here - hm, so they're not too different from Earthlings, are they? Lenard, by the way, would reprise his role of Sarek on a couple of TNG episodes and in several of the Trek movies.
ABOVE: McCoy can't do the Vulcan hand salute the Vulcan version of a kiss, I guess

BoG's Score: 9 out of 10
Extra Trek Trivia: Mark Lenard & Jane Wyatt would be reunited, sort of, in the 4th Trek film, The Voyage Home (1986), though they didn't have any scenes together. Spock's pet, a Sehlat he had as a kid, showed up in animated form in the episode Yesteryear of the Animated Series. It's established here that Sarek is 102 years old, just halfway into middle age by Vulcan standards; Sarek himself gives a more precise figure - 102.437.
Kirk vs. assassin: fight scene
Note the several seconds of footage at the very start, where we see a crewman walking away down the ship's corridor,
oblivious to the peril the captain is in, noisy as it is.

CLASSIC TREK QUOTES:
Sarek: "Tellarites do not argue for reasons. They simply argue."
