episode #04 - The Lorelei Signal
Air Date: 9/29/73 written by Margaret Armen
This is the first TAS episode that has a slightly unintentional comical side to it; nothing too much, just a suggestion of payback against the male crew members for taking their female crew members for granted. It's also a clear sign of acknowledging the female liberation movement of the sixties. The crew are investigating a region of space where starships tend to disappear every 27 years. The cause turns out to be a bevy of space sirens who mesmerize the males with a certain signal and then drain their lifeforces to maintain immortality. The Enterprise's female crew are immune to the signal; so, Lt. Uhura takes command and, along with Chapel and a bevy of mini-skirted crew members, proceeds on a rescue operation.
This one has some similarity to the TOS episode The Deadly Years, because the male crew are afflicted with premature aging once again. It's very unusual, however, to see Uhura and the other female crew members take charge like that; it never happened before and hasn't since. However, here we see the limitations of the animated format and the short length: Uhura behaves like she had taken command many times before; there's no hint of trepidation for the unusual situation; and, there's no epilogue where-in the audience would see the crew briefly discuss the events of the past day - just a few words would have been interesting. Finally, I'm perplexed over the lack of judicial repercussions for the female villains of the piece. BoG's Score: 6.5 out of 10
