episode #06 - The Survivor
Air Date: 10/13/73 written by James Schmerer
The Enterprise comes across a small ship and picks up a survivor - the famous Carter Winston, a rich space trader known for his benevolent contributions to Federation society. On board the Enterprise, working as part of the security staff, is Winston's fiancee. But, Winston tells her that their relationship must end. It has something to do with reconstruction of his damaged body. His credentials and medical scans check out, though McCoy sees a minor glitch he can't explain. It soon becomes evident that Winston is not who he seems to be. The plot later involves the Neutral Zone and the Romulans.
This obviously parallels plot points from TOS episodes The Man Trap and What Are Little Girls Made Of, involving an alien chameleon and a female crew member. However, this does surprisingly well with what might have been stale story points. It's fast-paced, contains surprises, some humor (Kirk confronts the alien when it impersonates a medical bed) and even some poignancy involving the alien and the crew member, which is impressive for an animated episode. This also visualizes an alien (its true form) in a way which could not be done in the live action shows, even the later ones (TNG, DS9), until CGI. BoG's Score: 7 out of 10
Trek Trivia:
this was one of the few episodes which utilized a voice artist outside of the usual regulars, in this case Ted Knight, who voiced Carter Winston
