Escape From L.A. (1996)
John Carpenter's ESCAPE FROM L.A. (1996)
starring KURT RUSSELL
STACY KEACH*STEVE BUSCEMI*PETER FONDA and CLIFF ROBERTSON
I think one has to be a really big fan of the Snake Plissken character to really like this film. Many sci-fi fans count Escape From New York as among their favorite films of all time and, even though this sequel was more lightweight and too long in coming, they still admire it for Plissken's presence. But, it's probably too absurd for most fans; Snake surfing on that small tidal wave, for example - it's a bit too silly. In a way, this sequel trivializes the entire concept of the first film. I did like the basketball deathgame - it was unique, as opposed to the usual arena-type combat to the death in such films.
Still, it was usually entertaining as the audience waits to see what strange thing Snake will encounter next. And Carpenter managed to capture that sense of nihilism associated with such anti-heroes as Snake in the final moments, telling us that, after all, these are not such nice guys in this future. Do pay attention. BoG's Score: 6.5 out of 10
