Eight Legged Freaks (2002)
Yyyaaaaaaaagh! Giant Spiders! Noooooooooooooooo
Director: ELLORY ELKAYEM
And then, another 20, er, 27 years later... it's EIGHT LEGGED FREAKS! (Originally titled Arac Attack, but never mind ).
This latest spider-problem fiasco stars David Arquette as the long lost wandering son returning to his hometown of Prosperity, Arizona; and Kari Wuhrer as the local sheriff (woo-hoo!); and a young Scarlett Johansson as her daughter; Doug E Doug as a local radio jock nutcase always goin' on about aliens invading; Rick Overton as the dopey deputy; and Leon Rippy as the creep always tryin' to make a lotta money (every small town has one; also, didn't PHASE IV from 1974 also take place in Arizona? That's the one with very intelligent ants; I guess there were a few 'monster' pics taking place there).
There's also a little kid who is a genius when it comes to arachnids. This emulates the monster movies of the fifties & seventies via the prototypical barrel of toxic waste! It falls into the local pond. Oops. Local crickets get affected; they are food for local spiders, specifically those kept at Taft's Exotic Spider Farm (Taft, the local weirdo, is played by an uncredited Tom Noonan). This gets a bit odd now. Taft is visited by the aforementioned genius kid; Taft shows off his spiders, which are getting larger. The kid leaves and immediately, all havoc breaks loose; we see that the ceiling is suddenly covered with cgi spiders. A strange turn of events. Taft is toast, of course.
EIGHT LEGGED FREAKS was actually a follow-up to "Larger Than Life," a 12-minute b&w short by the same director in 1998. That short film was about a new house owner, a female, encountering giant spiders in her home while trying to redecorate it. Spider Stats:
