Episode #25, segment 1 - The Once and Future King
#25a: THE ONCE AND FUTURE KING written by Bryce Maritano and George R.R.Martin (teleplay)
--------- Directed by Jim McBride
The title makes this sound like something similar to the last episode segment of the first season - THE LAST DEFENDER OF CAMELOT - but it involves another kind of king, Elvis Presley. An Elvis impersonator (Jeff Yagher) gets into a road accident while on his way to Vegas and wakes up in 1954. Next thing you know, he's picked up by a guy in an old truck - Elvis himself (also Yagher). The expectation of this kind of story is that the impersonator helps out the real Elvis somehow, perhaps taking his place temporarily, and then wakes as if from a dream. But, this is the Zone and the story goes into unexpected, somewhat dark directions.

Hope you don't mind sub-titles:
I sort of like the twist midway and to the end, because it's not predictable, but real big Elvis fans would probably find that this undermines the entire Elvis legend - both his talent and uniqueness. After all, there were impersonators - some good - but only one real Elvis. And, the behavior of the real Elvis here at the midpoint is not very believable, kind of out of left field to force the story to work the way it does. BoG's Score: 6 out of 10
