Episode #82: Future Imperfect
FUTURE IMPERFECT episode #8 of 4th season / Air Date: 11/12/90
written by J. Larry Carroll, David Bennett Carren; Directed by Les Landau
This one is all about Number One a.k.a. Riker - it's his birthday. The party in Ten Forward is interrupted when Riker has to beam down to an unknown planet to check strange readings. Toxic gas overcomes him and when he awakes, it's 16 years later; he's captain, Data is his first officer, Picard is a bearded admiral, there's a Ferengi at the helm, the Romulans are friends and Riker even has a son (Chris Demetral). Dr. Crusher explains to him that a viral infection he contracted during that beam down 16 years earlier has finally effected a memory loss of all those years.
TNG Trivia: the future depicted in this episode actually turned out to be accurate in some ways: La Forge, as here, no longer used his visor years later; Riker did get promoted to captain 12 years after this episode; there was a half-Klingon female serving aboard the Starfleet ship Voyager; and, the Ferengi Nog (on the DS9 series) was accepted into Starfleet years later.
