Episode #32, segment 1 - The Card
#32: THE CARD (episode #8 of 2nd season)
written by Michael Cassutt Directed by Bradford May
The credit card from the dark side of the Zone: a wife and mom (Susan Blakely) has a poor credit history; she's usually late in paying her bill. She gets an invite from a new credit card company; she can get a credit card but the rules are strict: payment is expected in a week, not a month. Of course, we all know she will blow it. The penalties are strictly from the Zone: first the family cat disappears; but, more than that, no one except the woman remembers having a cat. Of course, the cat is just the beginning.
This one played around with the restructuring of reality. It's explained briefly by the credit card company rep, a sinister woman, but still is basically nonsensical. Yet, that doesn't matter in the Zone; it's the warping of reality at its best. This simply exaggerates the expected drawbacks of using credit, but it works powerfully. Actress Blakely takes center stage here and holds it well, to the point that all other characters, including her husband (William Atherton), are just peripheral. It's all Blakely's show; her panic near the end is palpable and the conclusion suitably grim & chilling. BoG's Score: 7.5 out of 10
