Episode #85: Data's Day
DATA'S DAY - episode #11 of 4th season / Air Date: 1/7/91
written by Harold Aptor, Ronald D. Moore; Directed by Robert Wiemer
A Day in the Life of... Data. A harmless and trivial episode which nonetheless has quite a few firsts: the 1st appearance of Keiko (Rosalind Chao), who marries O'Brien (Colm Meaney) here - their story would continue for many years further on the DS9 series. We also first see Data's cat here and Mot, the barber. We get all this info under the guise that Data is sending periodic reports or letters to commander Maddox, the guy who wanted to disassemble Data in The Measure of a Man (2nd season). So, Data also narrates most of this. It's Data all the way for Data fans!
Some of this is truly tedious to me - there is an extended scene of Crusher teaching Data to tap-dance; then she learns that the lesson was intended for the wedding - duh! (actress McFadden was a pro dancer in real life). Still, if one is the mood for frivolity and quirkiness or just some routine interaction, one could do worse, I suppose.
There's also a subplot about a female Vulcan ambassador on-board and some secret doings with Picard in the background. She ends up beaming over to a Romulan vessel and there's a surprise revelation in regard to this. This was all kind of tacked on to the main plot awkwardly, but offers some thrills and intrigue in which Picard is not the victor - a bit unusual. BoG's Score: 6 out of 10
