Cinefantastique - 3rd ish
CINEFANTASTIQUE - issue the Third (June, 1971)
The cover of the 3rd issue looked bizarre - especially if you weren't familiar with it - but it was simply the decontamination scene from The Andromeda Strain (actor James Olson wore the special helmet while being sprayed). The back cover was a large still of Vincent Price from The Abominable Dr. Phibes.
Clarke's lengthy Sense of Wonder editorial, in small type, focused on Night of the Living Dead, of all things. He mentions how critic Roger Ebert wrote a condemning review of the film, mostly having to do with how ignorant moms left their little kids at matinees of the film; the kids ended up crying in terror as the film unreeled. Clarke went on to dissect the film as a parable on the majority of a society overwhelming the individual.
The two main articles: Oriental Fantasy From Daiei, the main competitor of Toho Studios in Japan and responsible for the Gamera films; and PORTRAIT OF JENNIE, a long retrospect on the 1949 film which starred Jennifer Jones and Joseph Cotten.
Film Reviews: THX-1138, The Mephisto Waltz, The Andromeda Strain, When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth, Brewster McCloud and Alex in Wonderland. In NEWS AND NOTES, another edition of "THE SCORE" and a tribute to Albert S D'Agostino. There was also an interview with Rouben Mamoulian, director of the 1932 version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, starring Fredric March.
COMING films I never heard of and probably never made: The Alien Blood Will Have Blood Brain of Frankenstein Brave New World starring Ryan O'Neal Cat's Cradle (Vonnegut) Demon Angels The Dinosaur Girl (like a sequel to When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth) The Disappearance (Wylie novel) Kyle starring James Coburn Sirens of Titan (Vonnegut) 10,000 Years The World of Two Moons
