Episode #68: Tin Man
TIN MAN - episode #20 of 3rd season / Air Date: 5/6/90
written by Dennis Putman Bailey, David Bischoff; Directed by Robert Scheerer
This episode had a lot going for it - a far-out ancient lifeform, Romulan ships and threatening Romulans, a star about to go super-nova, great FX for TV - but it just wasn't able to rise to the top of the heap as far as TNG episodes. It may have something to do with the central guest character, a super-Betazoid who is unable to shut out the feelings & thoughts of all the people around him; he's like an amped-up Deanna Troi - on a ship like the Enterprise-D, he 'senses' the thoughts of all one thousand people aboard and can't shut them out.
Surrounding this ultra drama-queen spectacle is the cosmic story of a discovered large, ancient lifeform in orbit around a star which Starfleet has dubbed "Tin Man" for some reason. It looks like an odd ship but is actually alive, possibly having wandered in from outside our galaxy. The Romulans have sent 2 Warbirds to investigate it and probably to destroy it (that's Romulans for you). The Tin Man entity, it turns out, wants to end it all and is purposely near the star which is about to explode. It has massive power, which may be bad news for the Romulans.
Against the odds, the lives of this Tin Man and the super-Betazoid will converge, to the benefit of both. I found this ve-e-e-rrry convenient; this super-entity has been around for thousands of years and just when it's about to commit suicide, the Betazoid may fulfill a destiny for both of them. Are there cosmic forces at work that we cannot understand? Also interesting: the super-Betazoid cannot sense Data, causing Data to remark that he may just be nothing but circuits. BoG's Score: 7 out of 10
