Episode #04: A Man Alone
A MAN ALONE (production #403; first season)
Directed by Paul Lynch; written by Gerald Sanford and Michael Piller
This very early one focused on Constable Odo and recreated the impression of a frontier town - just that it's on a space station, in the 24th century. The story involves a murder, a 24th century version of a lynch mob and the opening of a school for the kids. The murder victim had a bad history with Odo and DNA evidence points to Odo as the only suspect; soon, Odo finds himself being chased by a mob of ornery citizens (led by a sleazeball played by Edward Albert). Dr. Bashir becomes instrumental in solving a murder mystery of the future using his medical talents. Meanwhile, O'Brien's wife Keiko, expressing dissatisfaction over being stuck in this backwards community, gets the idea to begin a kids' school to make herself useful. A subplot involving Sisko's son Jake and Ferengi kid Nog points out that kids on the station need structure.
The whole episode reminded me a little bit of such old TV western series like Gunsmoke, with Odo in the role of a deputy suddenly on the other side of the law, Sisko the marshall like Matt Dillon, Kira as the other deputy, Keiko now the local schoolteacher (complete with one-room schoolhouse) and Bashir the local doc who lets science show everyone up. Despite Bashir's role in getting to the bottom of it all, he also proves to be more annoying than ever, continuing his fruitless romantic pursuit of Dax. A mildly entertaining episode, with apparent, expected parallels to how life was lived on the outskirts of civilization in 19th century America or similar locales and showing how the characters are settling in. BoG's Score: 6 out of 10
