Episode #107 & #108: Unification,parts 1 & 2
UNIFICATION, Parts One & Two episodes #7 & #8 of 5th season / Air Dates: 11/4 & 11/11/91
written by Rick Berman, Michael Piller, Jeri Taylor; Directed by Les Landau (pt.1), Cliff Bole (pt.2)
At the time, this 2-part episode was famous even before it aired; all the fans knew that it would feature Spock (Leonard Nimoy) from TOS. It had the highest ratings as a result. The episode itself: much talk, less action. I found it to be dull back in 1991; nowadays, it's interesting to watch as a historical footnote - even there it fails a bit: a decade later, there was no sign of Spock or his efforts on Romulus in Star Trek Nemesis (2002), so everything which happens here seems for naught. It also comes across as gimmicky, coinciding with the release of Star Trek VI:The Undiscovered Country (1991).
In the plot, a female Starfleet admiral informs Picard that an important ambassador has disappeared - possibly defected to the Romulans. Of course, she speaks of Spock. Picard first rushes over to see Spock's father, Sarek (Mark Lenard), but Sarek has worsened since his appearance in Sarek; he's near the end. But, he becomes lucid for a few moments to give Picard some info. Towards the end of part one, Picard receives a message that Sarek has died, so this marked the end of Sarek's saga.
