Episode #07: Q-Less
Q-LESS (production #407, first season) Directed by Paul Lynch
written by Robert Hewitt Wolfe and Hannah Louise Shearer
This one began the Trek tradition of including Q (John de Lancie) in at least one of the episodes of the new series (Q first appeared in the pilot of TNG, as well as an early episode of the first season there). This one continues from a late TNG episode, Q-Pid, which also featured the rogue female archeologist Vash (Jennifer Hetrick). Both of them show up at the station here.
I never thought Vash made a good fit in 24th century Trek; she was like something out of an Indiana Jones movie and I never got her motives - a pro scientist yet also a sneak; she's like a female Quark, whom she teams up with briefly. For some reason, Q pursues her like a jilted lover. This has its cute moments - Q's 1st confrontation with Sisko, Q's usual trickster ways & commentary, Q's trick on Bashir, Q's putdown of O'Brien - but is actually one of the worse Q episodes and pointless. I did like how O'Brien recognized Q (that ol' Trek continuity) and that Sisko was aware of the joker. This also had Odo, the truly alien character, making his commentary on human foibles, such as accumulating things; he would do this a lot in early episodes. The revelation at the end about a strange artifact is out of left field and copies several other Trek episodes. BoG's Score: 5 out of 10
