episode #066 - Two
Air Date: 9/15/61 written and directed by Montgomery Pittman
It's the aftermath of a nuclear war and, 6 years after, the jungle already encroaches on decaying towns. Seems like everyone is dead, except for two soldiers from opposite sides of the war; we can tell that they're soldiers because they still wear their messy uniforms. The first one we see is female (Elizabeth Montgomery), wandering in the devastation, foraging for food. The 2nd one is male (Charles Bronson) and he's the only one who speaks in this episode. By this, we infer that he's American or something close to it, while the female is Soviet (or something akin to it). When they first run across each other, a fight breaks out, which the man wins. But, he has no interest in continuing the war. It becomes a question of whether the two will be able to co-exist in this desolate aftermath.
There's not much to expect from the scenario presented - there are no standout scenes, no exemplary acting and no real surprises. It's still a solid and intriguing TZ episode, again suggesting an Adam-and-Eve theme (presented at least one other time in Probe 7, Over and Out). Bronson has to carry the ball in most ways, having the lion's share of the dialog (Montgomery only utters one word, in Russian). He does OK but is a bit stiff, so it's a bit off-putting listening to just his droning for the whole episode. But, Montgomery does a fine job with her all but silent acting gig here; she makes the ending rather touching. A very similar 'after-the-bomb' scenario is in the episode The Old Man in the Cave. BoG's Score: 6.5 out of 10
