Episode #15: Progress
PROGRESS (prod.#415; first season) Director: Les Landau
written by Peter Allan Fields
As indicated by the title, this story is about progress rolling over the needs of the individual. It's a familiar story, even in real life, such as a farmer being forced off his land by the expansion of civilization, usually via a request, uh, demand by the government (Eminent Domain,hm?). In this case, veteran actor Brian Keith plays the old man who refuses to leave his plot of land on one of Bajor's moons (a very nice moon, compared to ours). The plan is to tap the moon's core to provide new energy for Bajor, but this process releases gases lethal to humanoids. Kira becomes very involved in the situation. This development breaks her down; the arrogant, defiant, hostile Kira (as Sisko describes her) is gone by the end of this story (for now, at least). The story is slow, but Keith is always watchable.
