Episode #17: The Forsaken
THE FORSAKEN (prod.#417; first season) Directed by Les Landau
written by Jim Trombetta, Don Carlos Dunaway and Michael Piller
I was prepared to really dislike this episode, knowing that it featured Lwaxana Troi (Majel Barrett), the extra-annoying mother of Deanna Troi, whom almost all TNG fans are embarrassed by. But, it wasn't that bad. As with Q, the character seemed destined to appear on DS9 following her several appearances on TNG. Besides her storyline, there is some off kilter tension involving an odd computer problem which O'Brien must tackle with all his odd creativity - those crazy engineers!
As with the previous episode, this simply retreads ground dealt with on previous series (Journey to Babel on TOS, several TNG ones, like Starship Mine): several ambassadors arrive on the station, annoying people like Bashir (yes! it's time someone annoyed Bashir). Lwaxana pursues Odo this time, impressed with his detective skills. I started to roll my eyes but the story takes a sober turn when the two of them get trapped in an elevator. This serves to eventually strip away both their veneers and they bare their souls to an extent. It's not that pleasant - but it's real. It's also slow, like a few episodes around this time. But, it follows up on Lwaxana's last TNG episode, Dark Page, where we found out that it's not all fun-and-games with her. She would turn up in a couple more DS9 episodes. BoG's Score: 5 out of 10
