Episode #18: Dramatis Personae
DRAMATIS PERSONAE (prod.#418; first season) Directed by Cliff Bole
written by Joe Menosky
This one also has similarities to Day of the Dove (TOS) - as with BATTLE LINES (see above). The main personnel on DS9, except Odo, begin behaving oddly following the explosion of a Klingon ship which just arrived through the wormhole. A Klingon is beamed aboard the bridge but dies immediately. Kira had been trying to convince Sisko that some other aliens are smugglers, but she had no proof; Sisko ordered her to back off. Normally, that would be the end of it; but, as the episode progresses, the story evolves into a strange power struggle between Sisko & Kira.
It turns out that the personnel have been infected by some kind of telepathic imprints. They are essentially acting out a violent scenario that had occurred many years ago among other aliens. Everyone becomes more aggressive & more sneaky, but there are also other odd personality changes: Sisko becomes preoccupied with building a clock; Dax is in a daze, reminiscing. Meaney as O'Brien, as usual, gives the best take on a more ruthless, creepy version of his character, while Brooks as Sisko alternates between extremes - one moment he's disinterested, the next he's yelling for everyone's head. This was also meant to be an action thriller, but it's not that exciting. There are moments: Odo's head splitting for a moment as he goes into a spasm; Sisko bashing an ensign; and the best one - Kira flinging Quark against a wall (followed by Quark appearing in Odo's office with a neck brace - LOL). But, it's surprisingly slow overall. BoG's Score: 6 out of 10
