Episode #24: Invasive Procedures
INVASIVE PROCEDURES (prod.#424; 2nd Season) Directed by Les Landau
written by John Whelpley and Robert Hewitt Wolfe
DS9 is again evacuated (just before the episode begins) due to a "plasma disruption" (i.e. a storm) in space. This leaves a skeleton crew - the main personnel (so I guess the "plasma discharges" are not totally lethal). The station is ripe for an invasion, which is what happens - a motley lot of aliens (2 Klingons, a female from Khefka IV and a Trill) take over after pretending to be in distress. This is very similar to the TNG episode STARSHIP MINE, when a group of thieves invaded an almost-empty Enterprise. What is different is the motivation of the invading Trill, Verad (John Glover) - he wants Dax, the slug, er, symbiont inside Jadzia. The plan is to have Dr. Bashir perform the operation - Dax is to be removed from Jadzia and placed inside Verad; and that's what happens.
The seriously alarming part to this is that a host like Jadzia usually dies in a few hours after seperation. The key to all this is Verad's girlfriend (Megan Gallagher), who quickly realizes that this is no longer the same man she fell in love with.
Unfortunately, perhaps due to time constraints, the episode is unable to explore any of the repercussions of such a situation. We all know that everything will be set to right by the conclusion and the whole thing ends rather abruptly, reestablishing the status quo. The fate of Verad and his companions is unknown. Even worse, it was apparent that Quark, despite some heroic moves during the takeover, was responsible for the invaders getting past security. The DS9 personnel were aware of this and a couple of them even stated outloud that Quark would pay for this transgression. None of this is addressed at the end. BoG's Score: 6 out of 10
Extra Deep Trivia: Tim Russ plays one of the Klingons; he would begin playing a Vulcan on Voyager a couple of years later; he also played one of the thieves in STARSHIP MINE It's mentioned by Sisko that Dax has lived 8 lifetimes by this point.
