Episode #31: Rivals
RIVALS (prod.#431; 2nd season) Directed by David Livingston
written by Jim Trombetta, Michael Piller and Joe Menosky
This episode epitomizes what I regard as a trivial one on DS9 - or on any Star Trek show. I just don't see much point to any of it, except to offer some mild amusement. The main plot involves a conman (Chris Sarandon) who becomes a chief rival of Quark's, setting up a rival bar & casino. In a parallel plotline, O'Brien & Bashir develop an odd rivalry over a racquetball-style game they play; Bashir is younger and a champion player, which makes O'Brien feel old & over-the-hill. Bashir feels sorry for O'Brien, who can't stand the younger man's pity.
The two separate stories converge towards the end. The conman has replicated a probability-altering device, which soon begins to affect luck throughout the station. Quark finagles a way for O'Brien & Bashir to play their game for charity in a tournament and O'Brien plays far too well, realizing that probability is being affected. The conman gets his just desserts by the end, but I didn't much care either way - he wasn't really a bad guy. This would have been more interesting if the story focused more on the concept of controlling probability, which enters the realm of quantum physics - but it's just a sidelight here. BoG's Score: 5 out of 10
Extra Deep Trivia: Sarandon's character is of the same alien race as Guinan's (from TNG) and Soran's (Generations film), an El-Aurian.
